Best Water Filter

March 31st, 2010 No comments

The subject of buying the best water filter has become a passion for me over the last 12 months. There has never been such a need for pure filtered water, due to the very high levels of contamination of our water both in public and private supplies. This is going to get worse over the next few years as the Government, both Federal and National make cutbacks to cope with the credit crisis. You have been warned!

So what should you do to make sure that you have an efficient cost effective water filtration system in your home? To say Fit the Best Water Filter is obvious, but this is what you need to have uppermost in your mind.

You need to think about the different types of water contaminants which may occur in your drinking water, here is a list of some of the commonly occurring ones:

  1. chlorine
  2. cysts
  3. benzene
  4. altrazene
  5. lead
  6. farming chemicals
  7. pesticides

This is only a small sample, there can be up to 2,000 different toxins in your drinking water.

Once you know what you are fighting you can decide the best way to deal with it. The basic essentials of a good home water filter are;

  • The system should be whole house, you can take in toxins in the shower and you may drink from any of the taps in the house.
  • Don’t fit a reverse osmosis system, it can remove the good minerals from the water
  • Use a multi filtration system with a carbon block filter and ion exchange

Once you know the basics, you need to fit the best water filter which meets all these requirement and at the lowest cost per gallon. I recommend Aquasana but to learn more about this read my other page at:   Best Home Water Filters – Which are They?

How to setup a big blue whole house water filter.?

I have well water and would like to setup a whole house water filter using big blue (20″x4.5″ cartridge supporting) filters with 1″ inlets. There is a neutralizer before the intended filter setup to bring the pH to the right range. I have practically 0 iron, low levels of orange brown sediment, no odd smell or taste to the water.
Considering a 2 stage filter with a sediment filter and a carbon filter. Would be putting 2 ball valves (before and after) and 3 gauges (before and after each stage).
Questions I have:
1. Is there any problems with using a carbon filter for whole house?
2. What is the recommended micron size for the sediment and carbon filters?
3. What kind of impact should I expect to the water pressure by adding this filter?
Thanks.

The plan is Way-elaborate for the water you described. All you need is a GE Smart Filter or a Culligan Whole House Filter with a Sediment type element. A simple IN/OUT installation. Forget all the stages and gages, and the pressure will be fine. Charcoal is fine for smelly water but you don,t need that. The GE Smart Water has a built in ON/OFF/BYPASS switch (that’s what I use) and I haven’t checked out the Culligan, but that would eliminate the need for ball valves.
—- In addition, filtering is a good idea.
If you remove the sediments it helps keep your toilets and sinks clean by reducing build up. It helps keep sediment build up out of the water heater and water pipes. It helps keep your ice clearer.
The GE is available off the shelf at Home Depot as well as the filter elements and the Culligan at True Value Hardware stores.

Ammonia Carbon help, best answer gets 10 pts ASAP?

I just bought a Marineland carbon ammonia that looks like this http://source-www.petco.com/assets/product_images/4/4743190144B.jpg because i have an oscar fish that makes quiet a load of waste and water never stays clean for more than 2 days after water changes. So my question is: can i just pour some into my external hang on filter (Marineland penguin 350 with currently two cartridges in there) after doing water change (25%)today?? Also if i do pour it into it how can i remove it without having to drain the whole filter??? Please help this is serious. Store is miles away from my house, so i might not be able to go back till maybe next week.
The tank is 4 months old, so it already cycled

If the tank has been setup for 4 months, cycling isn’t the case. Oscars are truly messy and their tank is not the easiest tank to care for. As for the carbon, i do not recommend you just pour it into the filter it self because it can either clog your filter or just go in your aquarium and fish might get sick if they ever mistake carbon as pellet. Another reason why you should pour it in is that it will be hard to remove it since it’s recommended to replace carbon every months, so their no way to remove it without killing all the bacteria if you just pour it in. Best thing to do is wait till next weekend or go to a local store and ask them for a “aqua-pure filter media bag” that will do basically the same as the pouch and it’s also pretty cheap…i got mine for about $0.89 cents a piece…and you are all ready to go
