How Do Water Filters Work is a Common Question

January 29th, 2010

The reason so many people are asking the question “How do Water Filters Work? is a measure of just how many people are concerned about their drinking water. The next question should be WHY are they so concerned? as this question is asked equally by those who have drinking water from the State supplies as those who have well water.

One reason is the number of natural microbes which are contaminating drinking water and the other is the sheer number of stories of supplies contaminated by man made toxins and chemicals. Everybody agrees that this is a disgrace in modern America but the State and Federal Authorities do nothing about it despite constant promises.

Americans by nature then decide they will do something about it themselves and the only thing they can do is to fit water filtration systems themselves. Quite rightly before going to this considerable expense they ask the obvious question : How do waters filters work?

The first extra question is to ask what contaminants to filter for. Chlorine is added in large quantities to the public water supplies (8 times the amount recommended by the World Health Organisation) and is now proven to cause cancers – commonly those of the bladder and skin cancers. So this would seem to be something to filter out. Chlorine can also cause worsening of asthma type of chest problems.

A note here should be made that showering in water with chlorine dissolved in it is just as harmful as drinking the water - over 70% of the chlorine enters the body through the skin, so one factor already obvious is the filtration system needs to be able to supply a shower.

As mentioned above man made toxins and chemicals in drinking water are frequent horror stories in the Press, so this a definite requirement of the proposed filter system

So we now come to the original question of How do Water Filters Work? The first thing to be aware of is that there are very big differences in how effective water filters are.
You will find that some are good at removing particles in water but not dissolved substances and some are poor at filtering out bacteria which can cause diseases.

Let’s talk about the main 2 types of filters:

Reverse osmosis is a process where the water is sent through a special membrane which does not allow pollutants through to the other side. Some water filter systems make use of distillation – water is heated to create vapor which is then condensed back into pure water. This process gets rid of some chemical pollutants and some other substances. But unfortunately the process also removes all the beneficial minerals in the water which are required for optimum health. This produces de-mineralized water, this is not good and our health will deteriorate without them.

The other main system is known as a Multi Filtration System, this uses a carbon block filter which removes artificial chemical toxins and has an ion exchange with sub micron  filtering to remove such things as bacteria which can cause disease. But this system does leave the beneficial minerals in the water which help good health.

So the question – How do Water Filters Work? is answered and is answered positively as long you choose the right type of system.
